The Greek word kairos is often used in rhetoric to mean something akin to “timeliness.” Or, as Merriam-Webster defines it, it means “a time when conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action.”
Kairos is thus the thematic backbone of this blog for three reasons. First, it uses current events to illustrate how communication concepts are useful for understanding what’s going on in the world. Second, it highlights the exciting things being done by people in my professional orbit, whether that be the Communication Studies Department at SUNY Plattsburgh, scholars I interact with through organizations like the Freedom of Expression Division of the National Communication Association (of which I am Vice Chair), professionals in various media industries, or relevant non-profit advocacy groups. Finally, it is “timely” in the sense that it’s the right time for me expand my own writing beyond books and journal articles into a more public-facing medium.
If you have an idea for a communication practitioner to profile, a communication-related event that’s coming up, or a new piece of media that you think should be discussed in a post, please get in touch! Benmedeiros85 at gmail dot com.
Finally, just to make it clear, the views expressed here are mine only. They are not in any way officially connected with or endorsed by my employer, SUNY Plattsburgh.
